Why Can an AC Leak Water but Still Cool the House?
Heat removal and condensate drainage are connected, but they are different functions. The system may still cool while water backs up in a drain, escapes a pan, fails to leave through a pump, or forms on a cold exterior surface. A water problem can appear before the vent temperature changes.
- Still cooling: This is not an all-clear. Safely stop the cooling call and have an active or recurring indoor leak diagnosed.
- Cooling poorly or airflow weakening: Ice or another airflow or system issue becomes more plausible, but the combination still does not prove a cause. Testing is needed.
- System shut down: An overflow control may have responded if the installation has one, or another problem may have stopped the system. The shutdown is a diagnostic clue, not proof of either cause.
Common Causes of an Air Conditioner Leaking Water Inside
Several problems can create the same puddle. Timing and location narrow the possibilities, but testing distinguishes among them.
The Condensate Drain Path Is Blocked, Disconnected, or Not Draining Correctly
Condensate needs an open, connected, correctly positioned path away from the indoor unit. A blockage can back water up; a loose section can let it escape. Position or slope problems can keep a pan or line from draining as designed.
Possible patterns include water below the indoor equipment or moisture that returns during long cooling cycles. Water after shutdown does not confirm a blockage because remaining water may still be moving.
The Drain Pan or Condensate Pump Is Not Managing Water Correctly
A damaged pan may leak even when the drain is open. Some installations use a condensate pump; a pump problem, blockage, or loss of power can let water accumulate.
Overflow protection is a separate safeguard. Some air handlers have a float or sensor that stops operation at a set water level, but protections vary. A shutdown may be a safety response. Continued cooling does not prove a switch failed or that no risk exists. Neither pattern should be investigated by touching the pan, pump, or control.
Ice Is Melting After an Airflow or System Problem
Ice on cooling components can release noticeable water as it thaws, so a leak may look worse after shutdown. Restricted airflow—including a heavily loaded filter—or a refrigeration-system issue may contribute, but water or ice cannot identify which one.

Insulation gaps, humid air on cold surfaces, or leaky ducts may leave moisture on ductwork, a cabinet, or nearby materials. Water at a vent or ceiling fits several patterns and proves none of them.
Plumbing, roofing, and appliances can also put water nearby. Note whether it follows AC operation, rain, plumbing use, or another event, without entering an attic, crawlspace, or ceiling area.
